讲座摘要

China’s English

English language education in the People's Republic of China (PRC) has been described as a "weather vane" of modernisation (Ross, 1992), in that the role ascribed to education in the language closely reflects the prevailing political ideology.  This paper examines the roles and status of English in language education in China using a historical perspective. At times, English has occupied a tenuous and controversial position in the PRC, being considered as economically desirable but sometimes culturally and politically suspect. Drawing on a study of syllabuses and textbooks, I trace the progress of the English in language education in different socio-economic and socio-political periods from a very minor role and status in the 1950s to its current position as a highly significant language in the country,

Qualitative research in applied linguistics

In this presentation, I will reflect upon my experiences of using qualitative methods in research in applied linguistics. I will present an overview of some issues that need to be considered when selecting appropriate strategies of inquiry for research of a qualitative nature; for choosing a suitable study design and data collection methods; for analysing and interpreting qualitative data, and for reporting findings. I will illustrate the presentation with examples from specific research projects carried out in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.
