Abstract:

Chinese adjective-noun combinations ([A N]’s) are word-level expressions constructed in an autonomous word formation component of the grammar. I propose a monomorphemic constraint on the adjective of [A N]. Together with evidence from a potential naming function, lexical gaps, and the tests of adverbial modification, conjunction reduction, and XP substitution, this constraint supports the wordhood of Chinese [A N]. Neither anaphoric accessibility nor the restrictions on the ordering of adjectives are reliable criteria for establishing the status of Chinese [A N]. The various properties of Chinese [A N] are accounted for under the framework of Construction Morphology (Booij 2010).

About the speaker:

Zheng Xu is Assistant Professor of Chinese and Linguistics at the Department of Chinese Studies, National University of Singapore. His research interests include Chinese linguistics, morphology, phonology, and historical linguistics. He received his Ph.D. in linguistics from Stony Brook University in 2007, having obtained a BA in English from Fudan University, Shanghai, in 2000. He has published articles in Journal of Linguistics, Language and Linguistics Compass, Linguistic Typology, Morphology, a special issue of International Journal of English Studies on advances in Optimality Theory as well as chapters in books such as Deponency and Morphological Mismatches (2007, Oxford University Press), Morphological Autonomy (2011, Oxford University Press),  Cambridge Handbook of Morphology (forthcoming, Cambridge University Press). He has also published articles in the Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics (2006, Oxford: Elsevier), the Encyclopedia of Chinese Language and Linguistics (forthcoming, Leiden: Brill).

讲座内容摘要：

汉语的形容词名词组合是词。它们由独立的构词规则构建。本文提出作用于形名组合的单语素制约条件。此外，汉语形名组合的潜在命名功能、构词时出现的缺口以及副词修饰、并列紧缩、XP替代等测试都支持它们是词的这一观点。回指现象和形容词的排列顺序不能说明汉语形名组合是词还是短语。汉语形名组合的各种属性都可以由“构式构词学理论”充分描述。

主讲人简介:

徐政，男，36岁。现为新加坡国立大学中文系汉语及语言学助理教授。研究兴趣包括汉语语言学、构词学、音系学、历史语言学。他于2000年获复旦大学英美语言文学专业学士学位，2007年获美国纽约州立大学石溪分校语言学博士学位。迄今在Journal of Linguistics, Language and Linguistics Compass, Linguistic Typology, Morphology, International Journal of English Studies等国际学术刊物发表文章。此外，他的专书论文发表于 Deponency and Morphological Mismatches (2007, 英国牛津大学出版社), Morphological Autonomy (2011, 英国牛津大学出版社),  Cambridge Handbook of Morphology (将出版, 英国剑桥大学出版社)，the Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics (2006, 牛津: Elsevier), the Encyclopedia of Chinese Language and Linguistics (将出版, 莱顿: Brill)。
