调素论的历史与现状题目:调素论的历史与现状(Tonal Element Theory: Then and Now) 主讲人:林华教授(加拿大维多利亚大学) 时间:4月29日(周五)17:00-19:00 地点:上外虹口校区图书馆604 主办:语言研究院中国外语战略研究中心 主讲人简介: Dr. Hua Lin is an associate professor of linguistics at the University of Victoria, Canada, specializing in second language phonetics and phonology and Chinese phonology. In Chinese phonology, Dr. Lin developed a Tonal Element Theory 调素论 which yields a unified analysis of all Mandarin tone sandhi processes (Lin, H. 1992, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2006). The theory was subsequently adopted by engineers of Tongji University in their Chinese Text-to-Speech synthesis and produced more natural-sounding speech results (e.g., Zheng & Chai 2001; Wang & Ji 2001). The Tonal Element Theory is thus hailed as one of the few linguistic theories that has made a direct, successful crossing to engineering (Liu 2004, Mao 2005, Song, 2006). In recent years, Dr. Lin’s Tonal Element Theory has been tested in experimental studies by researchers such as Feng (2015a, 2015b). In additional to theoretical modeling, Dr. Lin also did experimental studies examining the physical production of Chinese tones using ultrasound and laryngeal scope simultaneously. She has also conducted research on the rhythm of Chinese dialects. One of the studies was the first to confirm acoustically that Mandarin Chinese is a syllable-timed language. Some of Dr. Lin’s most recent research, teaching and graduate student supervision fall within the area of second language speech (second language phonetics and phonology). In this area, she has conducted a good number of research, including English rhythm produced by Mandarin speakers, perception of Mandarin tones by English speakers, perception of English /r/ and /l/ by Japanese speakers, perception of Japanese vowels by English speakers, production and perception of English interdentals by non-native speakers, etc.
